Who do we think we're kidding?
There are several writers in the sports world who've written articles lately saying that the New York Giants have a good chance of beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl next Sunday. Not that I honestly care about the "Stupor Bowl", but come on. The Patriots haven't lost a game since Lincoln was president and the Giants aren't the team to be the only blemish.
The Pats have beaten their opponents this year by a combined score of 641-306. 641-306!! That's a lot of butt-whooping. Granted, they played some patsies. The Jets, the Bungles and the Dolphins were all among their victims. They even beat the hapless Deadskins 52-7. But they also beat good teams like the Cowboys, Chargers and Colts.
Some teams came close to beating them. The Colts only lost by four. The Eagles and Ravens only lost by three. And these same Giants only lost by a field goal less than a month ago. But they also beat up on the Bills (56-10), Steelers (34-13), and a good Dallas team (48-27).
The Giants have a chance next week like Mike Tyson had a chance against Buster Douglass, and it will probably end up the same way, with the Giants, glassy-eyed, searching for their mouthpiece on the canvas. The Giants have a chance? Hardly! My prediction is one of the most lopsided Super Bowls of all time, say, 44-3 Pats.
Sure, I want New England to lose, too. When I was a kid I was a Fran Tarkenton fan and rooted for these same 'Jints. Not only that, but all of that cheating talk at the start of the season soured me against them, too. But let's face it. They won't lose. They'll remain undefeated and will outshine the '72 Dolphins team as the greatest of all time. Face it, America. Just face the reality of it all, like it or not.
